Homesick

Homesick analyses historical childhood dress, exploring lost childhoods and loss of innocence. The collection focuses on textile manipulations associated with women’s’ crafts and childrenswear, such as smocking, embroidery, appliqué and quilting. Many fashion eras are represented, rather than concentrating on specific historical moments, to provoke a collective and contrived nostalgia for a history which only exists in the imagination.

Lily Stephen

Over the past year, Lily taught herself sewing crafts traditionally performed by women, such as smocking, embroidery, applique and quilting. She found inspiration in the process, and felt herself connected to the women of the past. Her practice applies these techniques to provoke childhood nostalgia, and to examine whether this nostalgia is misplaced.
